Car Stolen in Portugal: What to do first
If your car is stolen in Portugal, first check whether it has been towed, then report the incident to the PSP or GNR and request a police report. After that, contact your insurer, rental company or car subscription provider as soon as possible.
Portugal is widely regarded as a safe country, but vehicle theft and car break-ins can still happen, especially in busy tourist areas and during the summer months. Cars parked near beaches, viewpoints, hotels and isolated car parks are often targeted, and foreign visitors can be especially vulnerable if valuables are left visible inside the vehicle.
If your car has been stolen and you are not sure what to do, acting quickly and following the right steps can make a significant difference. This guide explains exactly what to do if your vehicle is stolen or if someone breaks into your car while you're in Portugal.

Your car got stolen in Portugal? Learn how to act.
If the vehicle has disappeared, report the incident directly to the Portuguese police as soon as possible. In Portugal, complaints can be made to the PSP or the GNR. For a stolen car, it is safer to go to the nearest police station or GNR post, as the Electronic Complaints Portal advises victims of qualified theft, including car theft, to contact the nearest police authority.
Ask for an official copy or reference number of the police report. This document will normally be required by your insurer, rental company or subscription provider before any claim or replacement process can move forward.
If the theft is still taking place, if there is violence or if immediate police assistance is needed, call 112. The Electronic Complaints Portal is not intended for emergencies or situations requiring an immediate response.
Portugal also allows certain crimes to be reported online through the Electronic Complaints Portal, which can be particularly helpful for visitors or expatriates who are not confident communicating in Portuguese. However, depending on the circumstances, you may still be asked to attend a police station.
Once the theft has been reported, contact your insurer as soon as possible. If your insurance policy was issued in your home country, ask for guidance on how international claims are handled and what documentation will be required. Most insurers will request a copy of the Portuguese police report before opening the claim.
If you were driving a rental vehicle, contact the rental company immediately. If the vehicle was supplied through a car subscription service, notify the subscription provider, who will guide you through the next steps and coordinate the necessary procedures.
Does insurance cover a stolen car in Portugal?
Insurance cover depends on the type of policy you have. Third-party liability insurance generally covers damage caused to other people, vehicles or property, but it does not normally compensate you if your own vehicle is stolen.
To receive compensation after vehicle theft, your policy usually needs to include comprehensive or own-damage cover with theft protection. Conditions vary between insurers and may include excess charges, exclusions, waiting periods or specific rules for calculating compensation.
If your insurance policy comes from another country, the claims process may involve communication between your insurer and the Portuguese authorities. Keeping copies of your driving license, vehicle registration documents, insurance policy number and police report will help the process move more smoothly.
What to do after a car break-in in Portugal
Sometimes the vehicle itself remains where it was parked, but a window has been smashed, the locks have been damaged or personal belongings have been stolen.
In this situation, avoid touching anything before documenting the scene. Take clear photographs of the damage, the vehicle's surroundings and any missing items before moving or cleaning anything. These images may be important evidence for both the police and your insurer.
If passports, identity documents or bank cards were stolen, contact your embassy or consulate and your bank as soon as possible. A police report may also be needed to replace travel documents or support an insurance claim.
Afterwards, contact your insurer to establish exactly what your policy covers. While comprehensive insurance often includes repairs to the vehicle itself, many policies do not cover personal belongings such as laptops, cameras, handbags or passports left inside the car.
Understanding these limitations early can help avoid unexpected surprises during the claims process.
How to reduce the risk of car theft and break-ins in Portugal
Most vehicle break-ins are opportunistic, particularly in popular areas with tourists. Avoid leaving luggage, passports, laptops, cameras, handbags, wallets, shopping bags or sunglasses visible inside the car. In tourist areas, even low-value items can make a vehicle look like an easy target.
Whenever possible, choose secure or supervised car parks, particularly when visiting beaches, scenic viewpoints or busy tourist destinations in the Algarve, Lisbon or Porto. Well-lit parking areas with regular foot traffic generally offer greater security than isolated locations.
It is also worth keeping digital copies of your vehicle documents and insurance information somewhere separate from the car, so they remain accessible if the originals are lost or stolen.
Simple precautions like these can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a target.
