Car Tips and Tricks
Car checks: essential maintenance and everything you need to know about car inspection in Portugal.
If you live in Portugal and drive regularly, keeping your car in good condition is essential. Regular car checks are the best way to prevent breakdowns and prepare your vehicle for the mandatory car inspection in Portugal, known locally as the IPO (Inspeção Periódica Obrigatória).
By performing simple car checks throughout the year, you can prevent breakdowns, avoid costly repairs, and increase the chances of passing your inspection the first time. Whether you are planning a long road trip or just commuting daily, Xtracars has prepared this guide to help you stay road-legal and worry-free.

Top essential car checks every driver should do.
Before booking your official inspection, you should perform these regular checks to maintain your car's health:
- Tires: Check the overall condition and ensure the pressure matches the manufacturer's recommendations, including the spare.
- Brakes: Monitor the responsiveness and listen for any unusual noises.
- Fluids: Regularly check levels for engine oil, coolant, windshield washer, and brake fluid.
- Lights: Ensure all headlights, indicators, brake lights, and registration plate lights are working correctly.
- Wipers and Battery: Check the condition of the windshield wiper blades and the battery charge.
- Documentation: Always verify that your mandatory documents (DUA – Documento Único Automóvel, insurance, and previous IPO certificate) are up to date.
Also pay attention to unusual noises, vibrations, warning lights on the dashboard and visible signs of wear, as these can indicate problems that may later affect your car inspection in Portugal.
Car inspection in Portugal (IPO): understanding the process.
Once your basic car checks are done, you need to understand how the mandatory car inspection in Portugal works.
When is the car inspection required in Portugal?
The frequency of the inspection depends on the type and age of your vehicle:
Passenger cars.
First Inspection: If you bought a new car, you can drive freely for the first few years. The first inspection occurs 4 years after the date of the first registration.
From 4 to 8 years: After the first inspection, the visit must be made every 2 years.
After 8 years: From this point on, it becomes mandatory annually.
Example:
If your car was first registered in March 2020:
- First inspection in 2024.
- Second inspection in 2026.
- Third inspection in 2028.
- Annual inspections after 2028.
Commercial Vehicles.
Light commercial vehicles usually require their first inspection 2 years after registration and annual inspections afterwards.
Motorcycles.
At the time of writing, unlike cars, motorcycles are currently not subject to mandatory periodic inspection in Portugal.
Although legislation once proposed inspections for motorcycles above 250cc, the implementation has been postponed several times and periodic inspections are not currently required.
What is checked during a car inspection in Portugal?
During the car inspection in Portugal, several aspects of the vehicle are evaluated to ensure safety and compliance with environmental regulations.

Inspectors typically check:
- Braking system.
- Tyres and suspension.
- Steering system.
- Lighting and electrical systems.
- Vehicle structure and chassis.
- Emissions and exhaust system.
- Mandatory safety equipment.
These checks ensure that vehicles meet the standards required to circulate safely on the road. Performing regular maintenance and simple car checks throughout the year significantly increases your chances of passing the inspection without issues.
How much does a car inspection cost in Portugal?
The price of the IPO is regulated and updated annually. For a passenger car (light vehicle), the cost is approximately €35 to €40 (VAT included). Reinspections (if your car fails) usually cost around €8 to €10.
Additional mechanical repairs may increase the total cost depending on the problems detected.
When does a car fail the inspection in Portugal?
There are three possible outcomes for your car inspection in Portugal. Understanding why a vehicle fails is crucial to ensuring you stay road-legal:
- Approved: Your car is ready for another year (or two).
- Approved with recommendations: The car passes, but certain minor faults must be repaired soon.
- Failed: Your vehicle will be failed if it presents any of the following situations:
- 5 or more Type 1 deficiencies: These are small faults that, when accumulated, indicate a lack of care, even if they do not immediately compromise safety.
- 1 or more Type 2 or Type 3 deficiencies: These are serious or very serious faults that compromise the vehicle's operation, safety, or environmental performance.
- Failure to correct anomalies: The car will fail again if previously noted deficiencies have not been properly rectified by the time of reinspection.
If your vehicle fails the car inspection in Portugal, you will receive a report identifying the issues that must be corrected. Drivers usually have 30 days to repair the problems and return for a reinspection. If the reinspection also results in a failure, the deadline for the next check may be reduced to 15 days.
Therefore, it is crucial to quickly address the issues identified in the inspection report. With regular car checks and proper maintenance, passing the inspection becomes much easier.
What happens if your car misses the inspection deadline?
If you forget your inspection, be prepared to open your wallet. Driving with an expired car inspection is a serious offense in Portugal and can result in heavy fines, ranging from €250 to €1,250. Even worse, in the event of an accident, your insurance company may refuse to cover the damages.
