Speed limiter: technology that changes the way you drive

The road can be unpredictable. One moment you’re listening to music, the next you realise you’ve gone slightly over the speed limit. That’s when the speed limiter comes in — a simple technology that completely changes the way you drive.

With a speed limiter, you travel more safely and without worrying about exceeding speed limits. Discover more with Xtracars.

So, what is a speed limiter?

Imagine the speed limiter, also known as ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance), as an electronic guardian that’s always by your side. This system uses GPS data and, in many cases, a front-facing camera capable of recognising traffic signs to ensure you don’t exceed legal speed limits. If you press too hard on the accelerator, the system will warn you, either through a sound, a light on the dashboard, or even by changing the resistance of the pedal.

It’s important not to confuse the speed limiter with cruise control. While cruise control automatically maintains the speed set by the driver, the limiter simply prevents you from exceeding the chosen maximum. In other words, you still control the accelerator, but within a safe boundary.

When this technology first appeared, it was thought it would always remain active. However, it quickly became clear that there are moments when it’s necessary to go beyond the limit, such as during a quick overtaking manoeuvre. That’s why today the system works as an intelligent assistant: it gives you freedom behind the wheel, without compromising on safety.

Is it worth using a speed limiter?

This technology offers real benefits, and not just in terms of safety:
  • Fuel savings: keeping a steady speed means using less fuel.
  • Fewer fines: no need to constantly check the speedometer — if you exceed the limit, the system warns you.
  • Greater safety: it helps prevent speeding and reduces the risk of accidents.

What does the European Union say?

Road safety is a priority for the European Union. Since 6 July 2022, all new models launched on the market (categories M and N — passenger cars and commercial vehicles) must include this technology.

And there’s more: since 7 July 2024, the rule applies to all new cars on sale. In other words, models released before that date don’t need to have a speed limiter, but those introduced afterwards must include it.

What if your car doesn’t have one?

Not every car on the road is fitted with a speed limiter, especially older models. And for many people, buying a new car is not an immediate option. The good news is you don’t need to buy one — there are much simpler, more flexible alternatives: a car subscription.

You can even switch to another model if you fancy trying something new. It’s all advantages. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a modern car for your holidays, a business trip, or simply to test new technologies without tying yourself to loans or long-term contracts.
